South Korean reality show “King of the Mask Singer,” which first aired on April 5, 2015, on the MBC network, will be remade for the U.S. TV market by Fox starting in January.
“The Masked Singer” features celebrities and professional singers wearing random cartoonlike masks to conceal their identity while they sing a song for a panel of judges. The disguises are worn to keep the judges from being bias about the singers’ looks or fame. When a contestant is eliminated, their true identity is revealed. China, Vietnam and Thailand have their versions of the popular show.
Actor Ryan Reynolds appeared on “King of the Mask Singer” in South Korea while on his “Deadpool 2” press junket in mid-May. Disguised as a cartoon unicorn, he sang “Tomorrow” from the musical “Annie.”
The Fox remake will be hosted by Nick Cannon alongside judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke.
