South Korea’s most anticipated blockbuster, “The Battleship Island,” will open Friday at Consolidated’s Pearlridge 16. The film is directed by Seung Wan Ryoo, who also helmed “Arahan,” “The Berlin File” and “Veteran,” and is currently working on sequels to the last two titles.
“Battleship Island” takes place on Japan’s coal-rich Hashima island during World War II, when Korean forced-laborers attempt an escape. It stars soon-to-be-wed Song Joong-ki (“Descendants of the Sun”), Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-sub and singer-actress Lee Jung Hyun, who dropped her weight down to a mere 80 pounds for her role.
Hashima gained a measure of fame in the 2012 James Bond movie “Skyfall,” serving as the island lair of villain Raoul Silver (Javier Bardem).
